The Roadmap to Mastery

The "Roadmap to Mastery" initiative is the South Yorkshire Maths Hub’s strategy for enabling schools the opportunity for all their staff to embark on a sustained programme of professional development to help support them in developing a "Teaching for Mastery" strategy towards Maths learning. The target is to enable all schools in the region to access the programme within the next four years and is being run in conjunction with the national initiative announced by Nick Gibb in 2016.

Stage 1 is for Senior Leaders and Maths Leaders to decide if they wish their schools to embark on the programme. A presentation outlining the key elements of a "Teaching for Mastery" curriculum can be delivered to a school’s leadership team or a forum such as a senior leaders cluster meeting.

Stage 2 is an "Introduction to Teaching for Mastery" twilight at the host school. This 2 hour professional development session introduces the main elements of teaching for mastery and seeks to clarify for teachers what schools need to address as part of any sustained and long term development.

Stage 3 is a programme of four further twilight sessions that focus on a different aspect of teaching for mastery each providing ideas for teachers to explore in the classroom.

b) Addressing misunderstanding – in the context of fractions

c) Going deeper – in the context of additive & multiplicative reasoning

d) Embedding reasoning – in the context of problem solving
